NORTH Hastings Supported Housing Committee moves forward with housing project

June 22, 2009, Bancroft, ON THE North Hastings Supported Housing Committee is pleased to announce the advancement of their Housing Project with the hiring of Sherry Hayes as the Project Manager.

Hayes has been hired to prepare the business plan to be used in attracting potential builders and developers for the project.

The North Hastings Supported Housing Committee recently received $20,000.00 in SEED funding from the Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC) to be used to prepare the business plan, explore funding opportunities, develop a preliminary housing design and prepare a feasibility analysis.

The committee, which is comprised of local agencies, organizations and individuals, is excited to proceed with the development of a 20-30 unit, multi-use, completely accessible, integrated and supported housing complex that will show case ‘green’ technologies. The project proposes to include a mix of market value units, rent geared to income, condos and life leases.

Hayes would like to hear from any individuals who may be interested in living in such a building. At this time the project proposes to provide housing units to single people, couples, seniors and people with disabilities. Support to individuals living in the building will be provided in partnership by various agencies.

She would also like to hear from local builders and contractors who may have interest in this project, particularly builders with experience in sustainable building practices. The project already has money committed to it and the committee believes this could be a very viable opportunity for potential developers. The plan is to use local resources wherever possible.

“The timing of this project is perfect”, says Hayes. “ This will compliment what is already happening in our community in respect to the Build Bancroft development. It will provide desperately needed housing in innovative ways that will only serve to attract positive attention to North Hastings.”

First Revitalization Effort of Bancroft

On Monday, May 25 at 9:30 am many folks will be gathering to formally dedicate our first Revitalization effort in the form of the Stone Garden.

The County Warden will be there to speak, Mayor Churchill has been invited as have Jim Burrows from Bancroft Rental, Lou and Dan Freymond from Freymond Lumber, representatives from Leveque Bros, and Dave Redwood.

Revitalization Survey Results Meeting

The residents and business surveys conducted this past year have been tallied and examined. A public meeting is being called for all interested parties to observe the results.

Please plan to attend if you are:

- pro-active to community and business growth
- enjoy challenges
- are business minded

Two distinct sets of meetings are planned. One to share results with the public. The following, to plan next steps for revitalization.

Meetings are being held in Maynooth, Coe Hill and Bancroft at the following dates/times:

Planned Press Release Coming Up

A press release on the redevelopment plans of the downtown core of Bancroft, Ontario will be written and submitted to all the online press sources on the last week of March. A copy will also be posted here for all interested parties.

The reason for this unofficial release is an attempt to reach more of our seasonal visitors and to garner more interest from outlying areas on plans to breathe new life into an old town. In fact, Bancroft turns 130 years old this year!

Bancroft Business Owners Make the First Moves

Here is the ‘new look’ of one of the first storefronts seen when arriving into downtown Bancroft via Highway #62.

All Committees Are Calling for Volunteers

Get involved in something that interests you and make a difference to the downtown core of Bancroft as well as surrounding areas. Six sub-committees exist (list them here) and all are looking for input and volunteers from home owners, business owners, and residents of the Bancroft area.

All ages are expected and appreciated, so teens this is your chance to help shape and participate in the new Bancroft.

A member of the Facebook group on Bancroft’s redevelopment project started a new thread on March 11. Please leave a comment below if you have other ideas to share:

“This is not directly related to the redevelopment but it is “Green”. I would like to see a large Yard Sale or Flea Market in the area for recycling items we don’t need. Perhaps by the arena. There is one in Lakefield, one near Ajax and a huge one in Stittsville near Ottawa. I believe it is the largest in Canada. People could rent a space and bring their tables. A great local and tourist draw…”

Will It Ruin The Town of Bancroft?

What’s this all about?

OEB Enterprises (the consultant) working together with Evanco (the developer), Forrec (the designer), and town council, have proposed a Mineral Museum, Government Buildings, Condominiums, a Town Square, Hotel, Community Center, retail stores, restaurants, board walks along the river’s edge and more to improve the downtown core of Bancroft, Ontario.
